How to Read a Stained Glass Pattern — and Pick One You Can Actually Finish
For a first copper-foil project, choose 8-20 pieces with straight lines and gentle arcs. Geometric panels and simple flowers fit that brief.
Every stained glass piece starts as a line drawing, and learning to read that drawing is half the craft. A pattern isn’t a picture — it’s a cutting map.
What the lines mean
Each enclosed shape is one piece of glass. The lines between them are where either lead came or copper-foiled solder will run. Numbers inside the shapes key each piece to a glass color on the pattern’s legend; small arrows indicate grain direction on glass with visible texture or streaking, so the movement in the glass flows with the design instead of against it.
The unforgiving rule is in the curves: inside curves that are too deep will crack while cutting. Beginner-friendly patterns avoid tight concave bites; if a shape looks like a crescent moon, it’s an intermediate pattern whatever the label says.
Resizing without distortion
Most patterns need scaling to fit your panel. Percentage math beats guessing: desired width ÷ pattern width × 100 gives your copier or printer scale. Print two copies — one to cut into templates, one intact as the layout you assemble on. After scaling, re-check that the narrowest pieces are still cuttable; below roughly half an inch, a piece becomes fragile in the grinder and awkward to foil.
Choosing a first pattern
Count pieces and count deep curves. A good first copper-foil project is 8–20 pieces, straight lines and gentle arcs — geometric panels, simple flowers, a butterfly with generous wings. Suncatchers are ideal because the stakes are low and the soldering practice is real. Save for later anything with narrow points meeting at one junction, long thin border pieces, or human faces — those are lead-line puzzles that punish beginners.
Where patterns come from
Books remain the densest source, and older ones are goldmines since geometry doesn’t date. Plenty of studios share free single-panel patterns, and graph paper plus a ruler will produce a better first pattern than you’d expect — design the lines, then check every curve is one your hands can actually cut.
Cut the pattern, not corners: accurate templates make accurate glass, and accurate glass makes soldering almost easy.
